Synopsis

Get-rich-quick promoter John Evart Hinton, sentenced to prison for a crooked stock deal, avoids incarceration by paying his double, Joshua Stevens, to serve his sentence. Stevens agrees with the understanding that his widowed daughter and her child will be paid a monthly allowance by Hinton. Released from prison for saving Detective Clancy's life, Stevens discovers that Hinton has violated his part of the bargain, but Hinton's attorney makes amends by sending the family to the countryside to live, intending to use Steven's resemblance in future emergencies. Involved in another crooked deal, Hinton tries to make a getaway by writing Clancy that the fugitive can be found on the Steven's farm. Arriving at the farm to make an arrest, Clancy succumbs to the daughter's pleadings that her father is innocent, finds Hinton and unmasks him as the real crook.
