Synopsis

Nancy Fane struggles to keep house for her younger siblings, Billy and the twins Bob and Betty, while her widowed father develops his new invention, an ore crusher. After Nancy reads of a reward for an escaped convict, Billy discovers a man in the abandoned house next door, and Nancy covers the man with a shotgun. However, the constable identifies him as writer Dick Ives, who inherited the house, and Dick humiliates Nancy by calling her a "little girl." Although Dick becomes friends with Mr. Fane, Nancy refuses his apologies. When a mining syndicate offers Fane $1,000 for his uncompleted invention, Dick cautions him to wait, while Nancy, aware of their indebtedness, urges acceptance. After Fane dies of heart failure and Nancy discovers that the invention's model is gone, Bob and Betty find it in Dick's house. Nancy denounces him, but after Dick rescues Betty from drowning and develops pneumonia, Nancy nurses him and rushes his manuscript to a publisher to win a $10,000 prize. Dick explains that he sold the invention for a large sum and marries Nancy.
