Synopsis

The king of Happyland gives his daughter, the Princess Loree, a pearl necklace, but warns that the country will experience sorrow if the necklace, an heirloom, is lost. When a stranger arrives from the country of Gloom seeking the secret of happiness, he and the princess fall in love. The stranger partakes of the country's amusements and learns about "fleeting" happiness, but does not discover the Master Secret. After a dwarf takes the necklace while the princess sleeps, the stranger, to dispel the people's grief, courageously retrieves it at midnight from a cave. Refusing the king's offer of half his kingdom, the stranger asks to spend one hour each day with the princess for seven days. Afterward, he leaves, but promises to return. Weeks pass, and the princess is saddened, until the stranger, now the king of neighboring Roseland, returns and proposes. In answer to her inquiry, the stranger relates that he discovered that the secret of happiness is making others happy.
