Synopsis

Fearing reprisals from her slanderous neighbors, Lucille Darrell, who has kept her marriage a secret from her Southern antebellum town, leaves Liza, her baby girl, on the doorstep of the Reverend Joseph Lorimore, then contemplates suicide by drowning. At the river, however, Lucille encounters another pitiful, suicidal woman whose subsequent violent death fills her with the desire to live. When the townspeople mistakenly conclude that the drowned woman is Liza's mother, Lucille remains silent and takes a job as Lorimore's housekeeper. Years later, Lucille tries to dissuade the now-grown Liza from eloping with Leon Muller, a notorious scoundrel, but Liza refuses to listen and leaves town with him. Soon after, the abusive Muller is killed in a fight with a gambler and Liza returns home. After learning from her mother the truth about her past, Liza marries the faithful Bob Saunders, who had been waiting patiently for her to realize their love for each other.
