Synopsis

Army surgeon Major James Carewe falls in love with Marjorie Caldwell, a much younger woman. Because of the age difference and hopelessness of his love for her, however, he gives her up and she marries a ne'er-do-well junior surgeon, Lieutenant Leonard Dames. Soon thereafter, Dames begins an affair with Mrs. Drew, an attractive widow. When Carewe learns of this, he quarrels with Dames and then arranges a transfer for himself and Dames, his subordinate. En route to Manila the three are shipwrecked. Carewe rescues Marjorie and they are marooned on a desert island until rescued by a passing vessel headed for San Francisco. Meanwhile, Dames is wounded, suffers a memory loss, and is washed ashore on an island inhabited by lepers. When James and Marjorie arrive in San Francisco and discover that Dames is still missing, Carewe searches for Dames and finds him on the island working as a lay priest known as Father Fabrican. Carewe persuades him to go to Manila for surgery to restore his memory, but soon after his recovery, Dames reverts to his immoral ways. When he discovers that he has leprosy, Dames commits suicide, leaving Carewe free to marry Marjorie.
