Synopsis

After millionaire broker Willard Montague fires clerk Joseph Martin, who loves Montague's daughter Lillian, they marry secretly, but Albert Williams, Montague's cashier, whom Lillian refused, frames Martin for embezzlement, and Martin goes to prison. When the governor visits the prison with his little daughter, she is abducted by escaping Black Jack. Meanwhile, Rosie Devoto breaks her engagement with her parents' choice Giuseppe and marries Eastside gangster, Buck Morgan. The governor releases Martin to find Jack, who now leads Buck's gang. After returning the daughter, Martin is pardoned, but Montague arranges for him to be refused work, so that Lillian will divorce him. After the emaciated Lillian dies giving birth, her daughter Marion is put in a convent. Embittered, Martin joins with Buck, Rosie and a doctor, to lure girls to become dope addicts and then to sell them. Martin becomes wealthy, but Marion instinctively shrinks from him. Ten years later, Giuseppe kills Rosie. Williams, who became Montague's benefactor through trickery, is ruined by a mistress. Buck kills Marion, and Martin, who gives his fortune to charity, is haunted by ghosts.
