Synopsis

Mrs. Joseph Luckett, a social climber, asks Susan, an impoverished shopgirl, to play the part of a countess at a gala dinner party. Posing as royalty, Susan is the star of the evening, and the wealthy Clavering Gordon falls in love with her. They plan their marriage, but Mrs. Luckett's secretary, Sinclair La Salle, demands that Susan buy his silence about her masquerade. Unable to pay, Susan disappears and becomes a nurse, while Clavering marries his former sweetheart Ninon, a drug addict. Over the years, Ninon's habit grows worse, and finally she becomes a patient in Susan's hospital where, in an uncontrollable rage, she blinds Susan with a pair of scissors and then kills herself. Clavering then meets his late wife's nurse, they fall in love again and are married, and Susan's sight gradually returns.
