Synopsis

Tired of over-civilized London society, George Van Rensselaer goes to the Alps, where he meets Elise, a young shepherdess. They begin a romance and George, still showing the signs of his cosmopolitan life style, plans to bring Elise back to London, but without marrying her. Rudolph, who loves Elise and who is less naïve than she, knows that George has no intention of becoming her husband and so tries to persuade him to leave. Finally, George goes back alone and Elise, heartbroken, tries unsuccessfully to forget him. Aware of her grief, Rudolph writes to George urging him to return to marry Elise and, after finally swearing off the profligate London life style forever, George follows Rudolph's instructions precisely.
