Synopsis
After the death of the aunt who raised her, and who constantly punished her for being born out of wedlock, Ruth decides to make a living in the city. Mrs. Reed, a social worker, who had been told years before that her illegitimate child died at birth, finds Ruth, and discovers that she is the daughter who supposedly died. When the whole story becomes known, the social worker's husband Judge Reed insists on a separation, after which both mother and daughter go to the slums to do social work. Then, after being caught in a street fight, Mrs. Reed dies from a gunshot wound. Her husband, hearing of the incident, rushes to her side to beg forgiveness, but arrives too late. Unable to make-up with his wife, he does manage to establish relations with her daughter, who soon gets married and continues doing settlement work.
