Synopsis

When Helen Carlton elopes with navy surgeon Robert Haskell, her father dies of the shock. Robert is recalled to his ship, and Helen, fracturing her skull in a car accident, goes to a village to recuperate. Two years later, Dane Ashley comes to the village, meets Helen, and falls in love with her, ignoring the rumors of her insanity, and despite her telling him, mysteriously, that she is not free. The intolerant townspeople, punishing Helen for her madness, stone her, and Dane has his friend, Dr. Haskell, help her. Unwittingly, Dane has brought a husband back to the wife for whom he has searched for two years. Then, another woman, the one Ashley had met and loved, reveals to him that she is not Helen, but rather her twin sister, Virginia, and that she has secretly tended to Helen since her accident and subsequent madness. In the end, Virginia and Dane are married, and Helen regains her sanity.
