Synopsis

When Buttsy Gallagher is accused of a high society murder he did not commit, he is suddenly elevated from tenement dweller to local hero, as women send him flowers and men admire his grit. Buttsy himself loves the attention and looks forward to execution as a way out of the slums. Just before he is to die, however, Peggy Winters risks her reputation to clear him. During a romantic rendezvous with her secret lover, Count Carl, she witnessed the murder, but had been fearful of exposing her affair with the count. Finally, she names the real killer, and after Buttsy's release, and his subsequent loss of celebrity status, Buttsy legitimately earns a hero's recognition when he fights off a band of gangsters who are trying to capture Peggy's father, Judge Winters, before he can block a crooked deal in city council.
