Synopsis

When her child Viola is born, Blanche Scott, a famous actress who earlier went temporarily insane after surviving an auto accident that killed her parents, suffers an attack of insanity that is thought to be permanent, and is confined to an asylum. Her cousin, Elsie Edmonds, who has moved to Blanche's home because of her husband's infidelity, adopts Viola. After Elsie's divorce, Blanche's husband Martin, a rich lawyer who unsuccessfully tried to seduce Elsie, gets an annulment on the grounds of Blanche's insanity before the marriage and convinces Elsie to marry him. Elsie's subsequent child Eddie becomes Viola's playmate. Six years later, Blanche, who has played her favorite stage roles in her ravings, recovers and returns home. After no one else will tell her the reason for Martin's coldness, she learns about the marriage from Viola. When Elsie decides to leave, Blanche attempts to slit her own throat. Her loving grandfather then dies from heart failure, and Blanche madly performs the scene from La Tosca , where she kills the baron and laughs hysterically.
