Synopsis

Disappointed that none of society's "400" have accepted her invitation to the coming-out party of her daughter Mary Ellen, newly rich Mrs. O'Brien blames her husband Patrick because he frequents Casey's saloon instead of his exclusive club. When an automobile breaks down in front of her house, and a man calling himself Lord Algernon Ste. Clair asks to wait while a repairman comes, Mrs. O'Brien's hopes for inclusion into society are revived. Meanwhile, a stranger finds Patrick playing chess alone at the club and offers him his company. Patrick invites him to the party, which is also attended by Patrick's old friends, the Flanagans, to Mrs. O'Brien's dismay. Both Lord Algy and the stranger court Mary Ellen, who prefers the latter over her mother's objections. At night, the stranger is suspected of stealing Mrs. O'Brien's jewelry, but after he captures Lord Algy with her pearls and reveals himself to be a Secret Service agent tracking Algy, Mrs. O'Brien throws her Who's Who in Society book in the garbage. The stranger takes Mary Ellen's hand with Patrick's approval.
