Synopsis

While playing chess with Father Malone, Cornelius Sloane, a retired antique dealer, relates the following story of how his daughter Peggy died seven years before at the hands of Stuart Watson, a millionaire art dealer: Introduced to Peggy by a mutual acquaintance, Watson, a master of hypnotism, puts her under his control and forces her to go through a mock marriage ceremony with him. A week later, Peggy staggers home, pregnant and alone. Watson flees to Europe, ignorant of Peggy's condition and subsequent death in childbirth. Having sworn revenge, Sloane arranges to meet Watson after hearing of his return to America. Sloane confronts the millionaire with his deed, and Watson tries to hypnotize the old man, but Sloane's mental powers prove the greater. After hypnotizing Watson, Sloane tells him that every night at eleven o'clock he will be visited by the spirit of his dead daughter. This curse finally drives Watson to suicide.
