Synopsis
Although Mary Fitz Allen loves Arthur Barton, a soldier, her socially ambitious mother promises her to the middle-aged Lord Lester. After Barton knocks out barrister Robert Jardon, who, desiring Mary, insults her, Barton, convinced that Jardon has died, leaves England after notifying Mary that he will send for her. After Mrs. Fitz Allen becomes aware of Mary's pregnancy, she takes her to the country and then bribes a servant to take care of Mary's child, telling Mary that the baby has died. Mrs. Fitz Allen then hides Barton's letters, and Mary consents to marry Lester. Meanwhile, Barton, knocked overboard by a sailor, drowns. Fifteen years later, Mary truly loves Lester. After Jardon, who was blinded in one eye by Barton and is now Lester's lawyer, discovers letters from Mary's child's guardian to Mrs. Fitz Allen, he threatens to tell Lester unless Mary gives in to his desires. After she refuses, Jardon is murdered by his discarded mistress Babette. When Mary is suspected of the murder, she goes to live with her child until Babette confesses, and Lester writes to Mary that he wants both her and the child.
