Synopsis

Phyllis Brown, living with her father Thomas in South Africa, is engaged to her neighbor, John Hayden, who lives with his mother. After Walter Brand, a hunter and artist, is saved by Hayden and Brown from an attack by lions, he is cared for at Brown's home. He paints Phyllis' portrait and they fall in love. Brown warns her not to go with Brand and tells about his wife's elopement after Phyllis' birth. He was saved from becoming a murderer when his wife and her lover were killed by savages. Phyllis leaves anyway for a large American city with Brand, who later tires of her and has affairs with other women. When Phyllis learns that their marriage was fake, she attempts to drown herself but is rescued and taken to the "Home of the Friendless." Meanwhile, Brown is killed by lions. After John finds Brand at his animal store and menagerie, their struggle overturns cages. As John remembers his mother's plea not to kill, the freed leopards smell Brand's blood and attack him. Phyllis arrives and reconciles with John.
