Synopsis
On his way home from Mexico, Davis Lester rescues a heavily veiled woman from drowning. After learning from her uncle, Roscoe Vanderhoff, that his niece Helen is insane, Lester has his physician, Dr. Luchow, confirm that her mind is affected. In New York, Lester is surprised to learn that the Vanderhoffs, with their Mexican servants, José and Inez, have rented the cottage adjoining his property. After Lester finds a blank paper that Helen dropped, she relates in pantomime from her window that there is a message on it in milk. This and similar papers, when scorched, relate that her uncle is drugging her with "loco weed" and planning to commit her to an asylum so that he will receive her inherited fortune. After Lester breaks in and is knocked out by José, Lester chafes at his bonds using the top of a ventilator, causing blood to drip into the room below and onto papers that Dr. Luchow is preparing to commit Helen. Luchow rescues Lester, and they chase Vanderhoff and José, who die when their automobile explodes.
