Synopsis

Stockbroker Harry Crane convinces his younger partners, James Poole and Richard Bream, to invest in cotton so that he can satisfy his wife Helen's desire for a pearl necklace. After they lose their assets, Poole and Bream force Crane to invest a customer's money. When this is lost, the partners draw lots for one of them to commit suicide so that the firm can collect insurance. Bream and Poole arrange for Crane to lose. At a lake, Crane finds a body washed ashore and switches identities. He leaves on a tramp steamer, while Poole and Bream cheat Helen out of the insurance money. For her child Bobby's sake, Helen marries Bream, who has always desired her. Years later, Crane returns as a tramp and is arrested for burglary at a reception. Poole kills the insurance company head, who recognizes Crane, and places the revolver in Crane's possession. After the real burglar is shot and confesses, Bream commits suicide, Poole is arrested and Crane is reunited with Helen and Bobby.
