Synopsis

In the ante-bellum South, William Lawrence inherits his father's estate and becomes the guardian of Jim, his mischievous half brother. Years later, William is elected governor and falls in love with Helena Leigh, who is infatuated with the rakish Jim. After he learns that Jim has impregnated Jenny, a country girl, Helena's father drives him from his home. To satisfy her dying father, Helena agrees to marry William, though she still yearns for Jim. While arranging for Arthur Willet to fight a duel with Jim, Jenny's vengeful brother is shot and killed by Jim, but Willet is arrested for the crime. Moved by Helena's pleas, Jim finally confesses to William, then is aided in his escape by Helena. Implicated in the conspiracy, William nobly resigns his post. After a change of heart, Helena admits everything in the courtroom and then, learning of Jim's death in South America, finds happiness with William.
