Synopsis

"Honest" Jim Martin is elected to the U.S. Senate from Oregon after campaigning against the land-grab bill that the railroad wants passed. In Washington, after Jim spurns the smoothly worded bribery attempt of lobbyist William Landers, he falls for the wit and beauty of Landers' cohort, Harriet Lane, who unsuccessfully tries to influence him during a reception. At Landers' instigation, Harriet calls Jim to help her at her hotel room. As she maneuvers herself into his arms, tears her bodice and musses her hair, Landers steps out from behind a curtain and photographs them. Although Landers threatens to have the photo published, Jim campaigns against the bill and prevents its passage. Harriet, who has grown close to Jim's mother and has developed an affection for Jim, contacts a police safecracker to retrieve the negative from Landers' safe. After Landers interrupts them, Harriet grabs his gun and shatters the photographic plate. When Jim receives the pieces in the mail with Harriet's note, he invites her to tea.
