Synopsis

Kate Merry, the well-bred daughter of a washerwoman, regrets her marriage to Will Cairns, whom she wed even though she did not love him, because he claimed that he had a good position and a lot of money. After suffering from Cairns's abuse, Kate leaves and gets work in a department store, where she becomes friends with wealthy Marion Nelson. Marion invites Kate to live with her, and Marion's brother Philip falls in love with Kate. After Cairns, who secured a divorce for desertion, saves Marion from an automobile accident, he woos her, posing as society gentleman Stuyvesant Holland, and she falls in love with him. When Kate and Cairns meet at a party, Cairns denounces Kate, and Marion breaks off their friendship. To show Cairns's true character, Kate invites Cairns to her room one evening and convinces Marion to hide there. After the drunken Cairns, enticed by Kate, embraces her, Philip enters and denounces Kate, but when Marion convinces him of Kate's virtuousness, he and Kate are reconciled.
