Synopsis

Nydia, a Christian girl living in a Roman colony in North Africa, is wanted as a Vestal Virgin by the high priest of Jupiter. Caius, the Roman governor's son, rescues her but angers the high priest, who attempts to capture her again. Nydia escapes, but her house is burned and her father killed. She hides in a lion's den in the desert, after which a shepherd goes to Caius' house to seek aid just as Caius' future bride arrives. Caius rescues Nydia again and takes her home, even though his father objects to her Christianity. Later, the high priest and Caius' father go to Nydia's new home and in a struggle with Caius, the high priest is killed. Caius' father has him taken away and then sentences Nydia to death in the arena. Caius' fiancée tells him of Nydia's fate, plotting his death as well, but Caius is able to save both himself and Nydia. They escape to the desert where Caius finally becomes a Christian.
