Synopsis

Frances Angell, a schoolteacher in a Western town, is attracted to Jim MacPherson, a wealthy rancher, but she refuses his proposal because of his roughness. Frances develops new respect for Jim after he saves her from a halfbreed's advances, but she is soon called back to her father's home in the East, where her father asks her to marry her former sweetheart, Chet Condon, who uses his mortgage on their home to win her hand. When Frances learns that her recently widowed and penniless sister Jane and her baby are coming East, she agrees to marry Chet. After the train carrying Jane crashes near Jim's ranch, Jim is persuaded by the fatally injured woman to be her child's godfather. Parson Perrin baptizes the child and promises Jane that he will take the baby to the grandparents. With his new responsibilities, Jim, influenced by a wandering evangelist, buys a Bible, and despite his friends' taunts, becomes a "child of God." Jim travels East to visit his godchild, and unexpectedly encounters Frances on her wedding day. After he pays the mortgage, and thrashes Condon, Frances accepts Jim's proposal.
