Synopsis

May Cairns becomes a great success in her first Broadway play under the guidance of theatrical manager John Gale. She falls in love with Gale and is brokenhearted when she learns that he is married. After leaving the show, she becomes destitute, despite the best efforts of old friends like Joe Burns. She is arrested while wandering through the streets but is later released from jail into the custody of Mrs. Gale, who takes her home while Gale is away. May does not know Mrs. Gale's identity, but discovers who she is when Gale returns. He wants to give May a bag of money, but to protect the kindly Mrs. Gale's feelings, May pretends that she is stealing the money. Mrs. Gale sends the police after her, but when they find the bag of money by the water's edge, they realize from the ripples that May has committed suicide rather than destroy the sanctity of the Gale home.
