Synopsis

On the eve of his departure from England to an Indian principality where he will be the deputy commissioner, Harry Dickson proposes to Elsa Arlington, but she gives no definite answer. In India, Harry sees Janira, the beautiful daughter of Ram Dass, a nobleman, and scales her garden wall to talk to her. Ram Dass, who wants Janira to wed the debauched Prince Chandra, whom she hates, reports Harry to the governor, who changes Harry's station. Chandra, on the wedding night, is stricken with apoplexy and dies. Janira, according to the custom of "suttee," is about to die on Chandra's funeral pyre, when Harry arrives, and after a fight, rescues her. Janira lives with him at the new station disguised as a boy servant, and falls in love with him, but when Elsa arrives with news that she loves Harry, Janira overhears him acknowledge his love. After Harry goes to meet the governor to respond to Ram Dass's accusation that he has Janira, she performs the "suttee" custom and dies in a fire to protect Harry's career.
