Synopsis
Laura Henderson falls in love with Angelo Angelini, an Italian violinist living at her aunt Mary Sherman's boarding house, but he leaves her and writes that he is returning to his wife in Italy. Several months later, Laura gives birth to Ruth, but Laura must leave her daughter with Mary while she seeks work in New York. There she is befriended by the Reverend Dr. Henry Bradley, who eventually marries her. Nineteen years later, Dr. Bradley is the chaplain at the New York City prison. Meanwhile, Ruth thinks that Mary is her mother until she finds one of Laura's letters. She decides to find Laura in New York where she encounters Tony, a lazy pimp who wants to turn her into a prostitute. When she realizes this, they struggle and she accidentally kills him. Tony's father, Angelo, now living in New York under a different name, finds them and has Ruth arrested. In prison she meets Dr. Bradley who sends for Mary. On the night of Laura and Dr. Bradley's daughter Ailene's engagement party, Mary tells Laura about Ruth. As a result, Laura has a breakdown and Ailene commits suicide. At Ruth's trial, Angelo cannot testify when he recognizes Laura, thus Ruth is acquitted. In the end, Laura begs forgiveness from her husband, and he takes Ruth into their home.
