Synopsis

Grace Roberts, the sensible daughter of a farmer, marries wealthy cattleman Edward Smith, who turns out to be a gambler, drinker and philanderer. Her only happiness is found in her daughter Vivian until Dr. Franklin, a former suitor, convinces her to run away with him. Certain that Smith will never agree to a divorce, they change their names and move to New York, posing as man and wife. Franklin becomes a famous surgeon and they have a child named Walter. Their happiness is interrupted, however, when Vivian becomes seriously ill and only Franklin can save her. Grace, assumed dead by Smith, is recognized, and the strain causes Franklin to go blind and die. Finally, Grace returns to her father's farm with both children.

Notes

Although contemporary sources did not list a director for this film, one news item stated that it was "staged by Edward McKim." McKim is listed in the January 29, 1916 MPSD under the name Edwin McKim as having directed other films for Ivan Film Productions and it is probably true that he directed this film.
