Synopsis
Because he defended Doris Jackson from the unwelcome advances of their boss's son, inventor John Hadley is dismissed from the factory in which he works and is blacklisted. Despondent, Hadley decides to commit suicide and jumps from a pier, only to land on a boat belonging to gangster J. Harvey Hall. Although he is put ashore at Yucatan and barely escapes Mayan Indians, Hadley escapes and returns home laden with riches. During his absence, Hadley's wife, who roamed the streets carrying their daughter Janet, collapsed, and the child was taken to Hall's house. The gangster raises Janet as his own, encouraging her natural mechanical abilities. When, at age eighteen, Janet invents a device to open safes, Hall's underling, "Handsome Harry," tries to involve her in the gang's activities. When Janet learns of her father's criminal connections, she is disconsolate until her maid informs her that she was a foundling. After a series of coincidences, Janet eventually is reunited with her real parents through the efforts of police detective Daggett.
