Synopsis
In a prologue, allegorical representations of Death and Glory stand on either side of a cottage. Blood trickles from beneath a stage curtain, congealing to form the word "War." In the main story Maria loses her husband, Gladimir Kubelow, on their wedding night when he enlists at the unexpected outbreak of war. Unaware of the horrors of war, Maria happily bids him to come back as a captain. Maria's joy contrasts sharply to the sorrow of her mother-in-law, who realizes that Gladimir may never return. Later, Maria learns that Gladimir has died during a charge led by General Blucher. She and Gladimir's mother find his body on the battlefield and take it to the bridal chamber, after which Maria goes insane. Mother Kubelow prepares a sleeping potion to calm Maria, and then, when General Blucher forces his way into their home, she gives him a lethal dose of the mixture. Blucher is first paralyzed before death overtakes him. Mother Kubelow taunts him while Maria giggles madly. Now Mother Kubelow loses her mind and sets fire to her home. In the closing allegory flames encompass the cottage, Glory cringes and Death grins triumphantly.
