Synopsis

While vacationing in the Canadian wilderness under a false name, lawyer L. Hampton marries a hunter's daughter. Later, he returns to New York and, without thinking of his Canadian wife, weds a wealthy client. Soon a son is born to the first wife, while a daughter is born to the second. Fifteen years later, Hampton is a judge and a gubernatorial candidate. Meanwhile, the son is falsely accused of murder and tried before Hampton. When the boy is wrongly convicted on circumstantial evidence, the boy's mother goes to the judge to beg for mercy and recognizes her husband. Fearing for his reputation, Hampton promises to pardon the boy when he is governor if she remains quiet about his bigamy. When he is elected governor, he reneges on his promise, causing the Canadian wife to visit Hampton's second wife and daughter in order to expose him. Taking pity on the women, however, the first wife instead pleads with them to intercede on her son's behalf. As a result of their influence, the boy is pardoned and returned to his mother.
