A Factory Magdalen

Factory girl Angie Smith is left pregnant after an affair with Walter Williams, the manager of the mill in which she works, but Walter wants to marry Mercy Mackay, the daughter of the mill's owner. When Mercy's father reproaches Walter for deserting Angie, Walter kills him, but Angie, who is a witness, keeps the murder a secret. Walter then forges Mackay's will which declares that Walter will always have his job and that his last wish was that Mercy marry him. Walter then accuses Rufus Sweet, a mill foreman who is in love with Mercy, of Mackay's murder. Rufus is exonerated, but leaves town and achieves distinction as an inventor. When he reads about Mercy's forthcoming marriage to Walter, he persuades Angie to accompany him to the ceremony, where she reveals her secret, and the wedding is stopped. In retaliation, Walter steals the company safe then hires thugs to kill Angie and her baby. The men throw Angie into the mill sluice, but she is rescued by Rex, Rufus' dog. Walter is apprehended and finally convicted and sentenced for his crimes. On her deathbed, Angie blesses the union of Rufus and Mercy.
