Synopsis
Gentleman Jim, a bank clerk who has come to San Francisco to seek his fortune, lends money to a prospector who plans to deposit his gold in Jim's bank. When the treasure is stolen en route to the bank, Jim manages to catch the robbers and return the money in time to placate a mob of creditors, who, having heard of the robbery, are demanding their savings. Back in New York, Jim's business partner brings their Wall Street brokerage firm close to ruin and then forges bonds in order to cover his losses. During a dinner party arranged to welcome Jim home to New York, the partner kills a detective who has arrived to question him, but Jim is mistakenly suspected of the crime and arrested. Sent to Sing Sing, Jim escapes and later proves his innocence with a photograph of the victim's eye, which shows a reflection of the real culprit.

Notes
The picture was also reviewed under the title From the Golden West. It is unclear whether Corbett, a noted American pugilist commonly called "Gentleman Jim," was called by that name in his role as the film's hero. Corbett was, however, a San Francisco bank clerk at one time.
