Synopsis

Convinced by his own brother that he has killed his fiancée's brother while drunk, Gerald Stanley, a gentleman when sober and a beast when drunk, leaves England for Canada to avoid incrimination. There he does not drink until news arrives that his brother has married Beatrice, his former fiancée. In his desperation, he kidnaps Elizabeth Gordon, a tourist, and takes her to his shack. Pursued by Elizabeth's father, Gerald attempts to escape with her by canoe. Caught in rapids, the canoe overturns; Gerald saves Elizabeth from drowning and asks her forgiveness. Finally, exonerated of the murder of Beatrice's brother and saved by Elizabeth from being lynched, he faces a happy future together with her.
