Synopsis

Disapproving of her daughter's choice of husband, Rachel Stetherill disowns her and refuses to accept any responsibility for her grandson, Robert, when he is left an orphan. Instead, safecracker Herbert Ashe cares for the boy and teaches him the tricks of the trade. Years later, Stetherill lawyer Justin Haddon suspects that Robert, now a successful burglar, is the heir to the Stetherill estate and brings Rachel and her grandson together--hoping to discredit Robert and thus make Rachel's ward, Enid Camden, the rightful heir. Robert does not take the bait (Rachel's valuable pearls) but he does fall in love with Enid, realizes that he must pay a debt to society, surrenders to police, and serves 2 years in prison. Meanwhile, Rachel reveals that she recognizes Robert as her grandson. After his release, Robert takes up farming, marries Enid, and eventually is reunited with Rachel.
