Synopsis
[The following plot summary is based on the English-language version of this film, The Woman Between ; character names refer to that version.] When Julie Whitcomb, a French modiste known as "Mme. Julie," arrives at her New York boutique after a business trip to Paris, she is informed by John, her wealthy older husband, that her stepson Victor, whom she has never met, is arriving that day from Europe. At John's urgings, Julie agrees to attend Victor's homecoming dinner, which Doris, her disapproving stepdaughter, is planning. After John leaves the dress shop, Julie is visited by Paul Niles, a young man with whom she became infatuated on the boat from Europe. Although Julie tells him that she can no longer see him, Paul swears his unswerving love to her. That night, Julie nervously waits for the arrival of the globetrotting Victor, who, out of loyalty to his deceased mother, had cut off all communications with his father when he remarried. To her horror, Julie discovers that Victor and Paul are the same person. Overcome by the sight of Julie, Victor announces that he is leaving the country again, but John insists that he move back home. After the dinner, Julie, confused and guilt-ridden, asks her husband why he married her, but he self-consciously refuses to answer. The next day, while Julie lunches with Victor in an attempt to halt the affair, John, suddenly filled with renewed love for Julie, tells his board of directors that he is retiring and naming Victor as his successor. At a homecoming party, the suspicious Doris sees Victor and Julie engaged in an intimate conversation and writes an accusatory letter to John, who has since left for Washington, D.C. Before John's return, Victor begs Julie to sail away with him, and she agrees to meet him at the pier. When John shows up professing his love and revealing his plan to retire to a villa on the Riviera, however, Julie has a change of heart and gives up both Victor and her career. Filled with happiness and forgiveness, John tears up Doris' letter without reading it.
