Synopsis

On the island of Sumatra, near Australia, a village celebration begins upon the birth of a child by the sixth wife of a native nicknamed "Clarence" by the narrator. Clarence gets drunk on coconut alcohol and spends all his money. Forced to look for work, Clarence leaves his village to seek employment elsewhere on the island. He wanders into a nearby town for the Fourth of July celebration, where he watches Japanese sword fights and the dancing of the cannibals from nearly Borneo. Clarence drifts into a gambling hall, where he is cheated out of what little money he has. Broke, he takes a job at a rubber plantation. After one of the workers is killed by a tiger, Clarence proposes marriage to his widow in the hope of collecting her pension money. He then takes a job on a coffee plantation where he becomes the gun bearer on a crocodile safari. After the hunt, Clarence is fired and wanders into another village. When one of the villager's wives is killed by a elephant, Clarence becomes a hero by killing the mad elephant with a poisoned spear. Two years later, Clarence meets a woman whom the narrator calls Maggie, who becomes his seventh wife. With his new bride, Clarence makes the hazardous journey back to his old village. Along the way, Maggie is almost killed by a python, but Clarence offers little assistance or concern. Back at his village, Clarence receives a hero's welcome. A big celebration ensues and Clarence once again spends all his money, so the next day he is forced to leave the village to look for more work.

Notes

The credits and summary are based on the screening of an incomplete print. Although the film contained a copyright statement, this title was not found in the copyright records. The film begins with the following written foreword: "Amid the terrifying, eternal gloom of the towering forests of a tropical isle-it is there we shall watch the exotic drama of the battle of a man with nature at its wildest-his struggles with the strange workings of his own destiny. Our scene is a mystic land of the magical East, where ferocious, man-devouring beasts, horrendous reptiles, and stark primitive forces conspire to fill the days with nerve-shattering perils and the nights with ghostly nightmares-where strange, primitive people survive today in all their pristine savagery, where the surging passions of the souls in turmoil create once again the age-old story of life amidst death, of love and aspiration at odds with cruel fate." Despite its claim of being a factual documentary, the scenes are all staged, and the narration is very much tongue-in-cheek. No contemporary reviews were found for this film.
