Synopsis

Tania Balieff, a pretty and rich Russian widow living in Paris, who has a compulsion for baccarat, becomes ill and falls in love with her doctor, Gaston. She never tells him of her love and when cured goes to the French Riviera and takes up gambling in order to forget him. In Deauville, she loses all her money at the tables, and must hock her jewels in order to survive. Just before her return to Paris, however, she is invited to dine with Dr. Victor, a regular from the casino. All her casino friends are there, but Dr. Victor asks his guests to keep quiet as he has a friend visiting whose rest must be respected. Tania and the others think this is funny, and she begins to play the piano loudly. The friend descends the staircase, and, to Tania's surprise, he is none other than Gaston, who has been so distraught at not seeing Tania again that he has given up all pleasurable activities. He admits his love for her, and she admits that she has turned to gambling in order to forget him. She promises Gaston that she will stop this "villainous passion," but does not tell him that she must win some money in order to pay her hotel bill. The next day, she loses at the tables and returns, penniless, to her apartment in Paris to discover that her jewelry, clothes and furniture have been seized by her landlord for overdue rent and that she has been evicted. Although she is expecting her quarterly allowance in a few days, presently she has no place to go. After fending off the advances of her concierge and landlord, who offered to give her money in exchange for sexual favors, Tania asks Dr. Victor if she can stay at his house for the night, and he, believing her to be an adventuress, decides to take advantage of the situation by making a pass at her. After she rebuffs him, in revenge he calls Gaston on the pretext of an emergency, and, despite appearances, Gaston makes no assumptions until Tania has had a chance to explain. She does so, and Gaston takes Tania back to her apartment, where a courier with a money order from her banker awaits them. Gaston is happy that she has told the truth, and the couple kiss.
