Synopsis

Paul Barnes is out with his sweetheart, Edith Stone, when they hear that her father has been found dead in an apparent suicide. To protect Paul's reputation from the scandal, Edith runs away without telling him where she is going. At Weber's Cafe, the waitress, Mazie, jokes with the cashier, who tells Mazie that she is leaving to get married. At her boarding house, Mazie passes Edith's room and hears her weeping. After Edith tells her story, Mazie decides to get Edith the cashier job at Weber's, despite Weber's misgivings that Edith is too much of a lady for the job. When a customer named Steele flirts with Mazie, she gives him a stale chicken sandwich. It turns out that Steele was Edith's father's partner in business, and Edith tells Mazie that she does not trust him, even though he says he is trying to clear her father's name. Mazie then phones Paul but discovers that the family is on vacation in Playa Del Corona. She demands that Weber give the two of them a vacation effective immediately, which he grudgingly does. At the boardinghouse, Mazie borrows some of Edith's clothes and practices speaking correctly. They visit the beach at Playa Del Corona, where Mazie trips, landing on Boyd Kenton, Paul's friend. He recognizes Edith and goes to get Paul. He and Edith are reunited, as Mazie begins to fall in love with Boyd. When Paul's mother is rude to Edith, Edith insists that she and Mazie return home immediately. Meanwhile, the investigation into the scandal is making Steele nervous, and he plots to get rid of Edith. When Mazie discovers that Edith has gone to meet Steele at his cabin near the cliffs at Sea Beach, she tells Paul and Boyd, who go look for her. At the cabin, Steele tells Edith that she must marry him on his yacht. When Paul and Boyd arrive, Steele's henchmen hide Edith on the yacht anchored offshore. Paul and Boyd demand to know where Edith is, and when Steele says that he was joking about trying to vindicate Edith's father, Paul punches him and they leave. Steele tries to escape on the yacht, but is captured and held for the murder of Edith's father, which he committed to hide his illegal actions. Mazie confesses to Boyd that she is not really a lady, but he says he loves her anyway and confesses that he is not rich, but will be working in the repair shop of his father's garage.
