Synopsis

Following a stagecoach robbery, deputy Tom Bentley and his father, Sheriff Bentley, tip off "Scar" Adams, whom they suspect is the thief, about a gold shipment in order to trap him when he makes the heist. In a shoot-out during the robbery, the sheriff is wounded, however, and Scar and his gang escape. Scar, really Jim Denton, whom his family has not seen in years, hides out at the Denton ranch. Years earlier, when Scar's father Frank caught him stealing, he accidentally scarred him and now believes that his son was born a thief. Scar is determined to exact revenge against the Bentleys, who have posted a $1,500 reward for his arrest. While Sheriff Bentley recovers in the hospital, Tom acts as sheriff. Meanwhile, he proposes to his girl friend, Alice Denton, but she refuses to marry him if he remains sheriff. After Tom narrowly escapes an ambush by Scar's men, the townspeople start a campaign to elect him sheriff, but he refuses to run, even though his father hopes that Tom will succeed him. In preparation for his wedding, Tom turns in his badge, and his father refuses to attend the ceremony. Although his wound is not yet healed, Bentley goes after Scar himself while the wedding party waits for him. Scar kills him and delivers his body to the wedding hall with a note attached. When Scar and gang member Buck go to the sheriff's office to retrieve a gun belonging to one of Scar's men, Tom and his friend Fuzzy see them and gather a posse to go after them. While Scar hides at the Denton ranch, Tom sends up a smoke signal to round up a posse, but Fuzzy is wounded by Scar's men before the posse arrives. When Scar's father refuses to allow Scar to hide his herd at the ranch, then pulls a gun on him, Scar shoots his father. Tom arrives and fights Scar, and Denton sits up long enough to shoot his son before he himself dies. Tom and Alice then prepare to build a home together.
