Synopsis
Although Monsieur Poisson has made a great fortune in business, he is not satisfied as he desires to enter into politics by marrying his daughter Annette into the aristocracy. Annette, however, is indifferent to her father's career goals and only wants to find a husband that she can love. Poisson finds Duc de Barfleur, who is willing to marry Annette, as she is an attractive girl, but the elder Duc de Barfleur is not enthusiastic about being linked with a bourgeois family. When the Marquis André de la Cour, a down-and-out aristocrat who works at Poisson's factory, is nearly fired for incompetence, he begs Poisson to allow him another two months of work. Poisson mistakenly believes that this is because the marquis has a terminal illness, so he decides to marry Annette to the marquis, who, he thinks, will die and leave her the title of "Marquise de la Cour," one that the elder Duc de Barfleur will not reject. Poisson begins his machinations to the pleasure of the marquis, who has loved Annette for a long time. The marriage takes place, and Poisson and the Duc de Barfleur attempt to hasten the marquis' death by lodging him far from his new wife in a small, damp room. The marquis, however, has only pretended to be sick, and he sneaks out each night to be with his new wife. All is finally discovered, and because the marquis loves Annette, he does not hold a grudge; rather, he helps Poisson with his new career in politics.
