Synopsis

Emil Gauvreau, the editor of the New York Daily Mirror , and General John J. Bradley, retired officer of the United States Army, discuss the horrors of war and speculate that the graphic nature of war newsreels, which had their birth in the Great War, might provide the kind or "terrifying revelation" that would discourage future generations from frivolous engagement in war. Gauvreau suggests that Woodrow Wilson and Napoleon were both great leaders of men, while noting that Napoleon believed in war but Wilson did not. Bradley agrees that destiny provided the United States with a man of peace to help end the world war, just as every crisis provides the necessary leadership. Both Bradley and Gauvreau agree that preparedness for war is the best guarantee for peace, but contend that this does not mean that enthusiasm for war should be encouraged. Young men, they feel, think of war as glorious and do not understand its horrors. In order to demonstrate the futility of war as a national policy, footage from wartime newsreels then is shown. The footage, which is narrated by Gauvreau and Bradley, includes infantry fighting in France, air battles, British tank fighting, Russian Cossacks, the American breakthrough of German lines, shots of German prisoners whose capture means they no longer have to fight, and Italian soldiers in the Alps, dressed in white camouflage. They conclude that although they are not pacifists, the United States must never again fight another war unless it is a clear case of self-defense.
