Synopsis

Farley, a sheepherder, and his family, Rita and Felipe, are being chased from the Box D ranch, which is owned by Jane Darnell and her brother Jim. The Cheyenne Kid intervenes and chases the pursuers off. The Kid is then hired by the ranch's foreman, Clem, who intends to turn him over to the sheriff because he is wanted on charges of murder and robbery. Jim has racked up a number of I.O.U.'s payable to the town saloonkeeper, Pete Lang, who is trying to gain possession of his ranch. Once again, however, the Kid intervenes by holding up Pete and snatching the bundle of I.O.U.'s away from him. Meanwhile, Clem, while visiting the Farley's sheep camp, tries to seize Rita, but the Kid appears and knocks Clem down, thus saving Rita from harm. The Kid then tries to talk Jane out of seeking revenge against the sheepherders, who she believes killed her father, and when he fails, he presents Jim's I.O.U.'s to her. Pete arrives at the ranch and tells Clem how the Kid tricked him into giving up the notes, and the two men fight with the Kid, who manages to get away. While Jane rides into town to get the sheriff, the Kid finds Farley and Felipe tied up at their camp and learns that their assailants have disappeared with Rita. Felipe and the Kid go after the kidnappers and track them to a cabin. The Kid tells the kidnappers that he was sent by Clem to help them, but one of the men suspects that the Kid is up to something and sneaks out to verify the Kid's story with Clem. Clem and Pete, returning after their pursuit of the Kid, argue, and Jim overhears Pete tell Clem that he killed his father. Jim is knocked unconscious by Pete, who along with Clem, rides out to the cabin when they learn of the Kid's latest adventure. The Kid has managed to release Rita, but Clem and Pete come upon him, and as Pete points his gun at the Kid, Felipe shoots him. The ensuing fight is stopped by the sheriff and his posse, and the outlaws are taken as prisoners. The Kid chases after the fleeing Clem, and when he brings him back to join the others, the sheriff introduces the Kid as a U.S. Marshal. The Kid takes Jane as his wife.
