Synopsis

The half-breed Indian Black Hawk announces to Morden, manager of a Canadian trading post, that the cross-eyed White Feather is arriving with more skins to sell. While White Feather's back is turned, Black Hawk steals most of the furs, and Morden and White Feather engage in a fight until Morden's henchmen throw White Feather from their cabin. After arranging to meet two Royal Canadian Mounted policemen by a big tree, White Feather is found with a knife in his back. While crossing a nearby river, Sergeant Bruce Morton of the Mounties notices a girl's canoe capsize in the rapids, and dives in to rescue her. The girl is young Yvonne Travis, and she invites Morton and his partner, Constable Jimmy Downs, to dinner. As Jimmy helps Yvonne to cook, the two Mounties meet Yvonne's father Gene, a trapper. Morden, meanwhile, sends Black Hawk to shoot Gene, but the quick action of Morton's dog, "Captain," deflects Black Hawk's aim. Gene tells Morton that, in the event of his death, he hopes Yvonne, who will inherit his timberland, will go to the convent in Montreal. The next day, when Gene tells Morden that he cannot yet pay his debt, Morden replies that Yvonne would be accepted in lieu of payment, but Gene refuses the offer. The Mounties then trail Black Hawk to Morden's forest hideout and take two of his henchmen prisoner while allowing Black Hawk to escape. Captain, meanwhile, leads Morton's equally intelligent horse, "Dynamite," to the river for a bath. The Mounties are lured into an ambush in which they are outnumbered and captured, and Morden leaves them in a shed with a fuse attached to three sticks of dynamite. Suspicious, Dynamite brings Captain to the shed, and Captain chews through his master's ropes in time to extinguish the fuse. Morden has Yvonne abducted to Eagle's Nest after killing Gene. When Black Hawk tries to stop Morden, he is knifed, but before he dies, he has strength enough to crawl to the Mounties and tell them what has happened. Morton arrives as Morden is about to convince Yvonne that he has saved her. The two men fight, continuing their struggle as they fall into a river. Captain brings Jimmy and additional men, who capture Morden's henchmen and arrest Morden. As their reward, Morton and Jimmy get a bonus, Captain gets a steak, and Morton gets Yvonne.

Notes

Although onscreen credits include a 1934 copyright statement, the title was not found in copyright register. The film's opening credits include an onscreen dedication to "the Mounted Police." Contemporary advertisements indicate that Courage of the North was the first of a series of "Northwest Action Thrillers" starring Dynamite and Captain. In spite of the ad, only one other film was made in this series, Timber Terrors (see below). According to modern sources, director Robert Emmett also wrote the script, and the cast included Charles King and Jim Thorpe.
