Synopsis

In Reno, Nevada, a gang of thieves, who perform in musical comedies, see in the newspaper that Utah Pete, a cowboy who finds gold in the desert every year, has returned to town. At a beauty parlor, gang leaders Lulu Broderick and her daughter Trixie meet Toots, a manicurist, whose sweetheart, guitar-playing Homer Tompkins, attracts people who need to talk about their troubles. Lulu gets the idea to set Homer up in an office as a "professional listener" to trick Pete into telling Homer the location of his gold mine. Two of Lulu's cohorts stage a fight, and Homer rescues Pete. After Homer opens his practice at five dollars a confession, Lulu's cohorts attempt to listen through a dictaphone when Pete comes for an appointment. Wise to the scheme, Homer makes such a racket that the crooks cannot discern the substance of Pete's conversation. The crooks then abduct Homer and demand that he tell them the mine's location. He reveals the location of a deserted mine, and there, the crooks battle Pete and his friends, who win and demand that the crooks leave the state. Homer, in the end, is able to become a duck farmer, which is his desire, and he reunites with Toots.

Notes

The working title of this film was Don't Fall in Love. According to the MPAA/PCA Collection at the AMPAS Library, the original script for the film did not meet the requirements of the Production Code. Joseph Breen, the director of the PCA, noted that the script contained scenes filled with excessive and unnecessary drinking, suggestive dialogue dealing with sex, and unnecessary gunplay. Breen wrote a six page letter of suggestions for changes, and the company agreed to implement them. The greatest change involved the character of one of the crooks, named "Blotto" in the script, who was an alcoholic. In the film, he was changed from a crook to a ham actor, and the gangster flavor of him and his partner was removed. Motion Picture Herald lists a release date of July 12, 1937, but this is incorrect, as, according to information in the Hays Office files, the film did not go into production until August 19, 1937.
