Synopsis
Three friends meet at a boardinghouse in Harlem. One is Nina Antinni, an Italian maidservant; another is Paul, an Italian; and the third is Emil, an Austrian. Paul and Emil vie for the affections of Nina, but Paul wins out. When World War I breaks out, Paul and Emil go to war on opposite sides, and Nina becomes a nurse with the Italian Army. She visits Paul and is shocked by his brutality. When the Austrian army invades the town where Nina is working, Emil, who has also been brutalized by war, plans to rape Nina, who manages to restore his humanity by speaking about the sacredness of their friendship, their past together, and international brotherhood. Meanwhile, Paul's army retakes the town and he rescues Nina from captivity. Friendship wins out in the end, and he allows Emil to escape.
