Synopsis
In 1626, Henry Minuet, the son of the governor of New Amsterdam [New York], goes to the colony of Danvers [Salem, Mass.] to buy grain, and falls in love with Priscilla Elliott, even though they do not speak the same language. Salvation Hibbins wants to marry Priscilla and when her father dies, Salvation's mother tries to force the marriage. When Priscilla refuses, Mistress Hibbins accuses her of being a witch. Henry defends her, but both are ostracized from the colony. Eventually they reach New Amsterdam where Henry's family has difficulty accepting Priscilla. Finally, they decide to return to the forest, shunning both of their peoples.
