Eighteen years later, Isaac is befriended by fellow exile Rachel Shapiro who is able to escape carrying a note written by Isaac to Miriam shortly before his death. Through chance, Rachel finds that Miriam has become Mussak's mistress, but when Miriam reads Isaac's warning about Mussak in the note, she decides to accompany Rachel and her new husband, Alexis Mayok, to America. Miriam marries Fedor Tomspky, then Mussak comes to the United States on a mission and stays with Fedor who turns out to be his cousin. Mussak wants Miriam to go away with him, but in the end, he is killed by the loyal community of Russian Jews who fear that Mussak will continue his evil work in America.
