Synopsis
In 1644, as rebels are hanged by the British after their war with Scotland, Barnaby Lee and his father sail for America, but their ship is captured by pirates and Barnaby is led to believe that his father has been killed. At the Hudson River, the ship is stopped by the sheriff of New Amsterdam, Mynheer Van Sweringen, and ordered to leave, but the pirates continue in the boat toward a trading point. Barnaby escapes and meets the sheriff's daughter Dorothy, but he is not allowed to enter the city because of his British ancestry. After an investigation reveals that the leader of the pirates is the brother of the governor of Maryland, and that Barnaby's father, who was not killed but taken prisoner, owns an estate in Maryland, Barnaby invites Dorothy and her family to Maryland to live in his new home.
