Synopsis
Hagar, a gypsy woman, is determined that her child Eve shall have a good chance in life, so she leaves her on the doorstep of the Fothergills, a Quaker family who raise her as their own daughter. Grown to womanhood, Eve longs for a more exciting life and so falls easy prey to Arthur Brandon, an extravagant man of the world. Eve marries Brandon then discovers too late that her husband is a drunkard who abuses the workers in his factory. She is moved by the nobility of Richard Blair, a young philanthropist who is investigating the conditions of Brandon's factory and who fights for the rights of a little girl who is blinded while working in the factory. Beppo, the girl's father, assaults Brandon for his daughter's injuries and is arrested. Brandon, misunderstanding his wife's friendship with Blair, accuses her of infidelity, thus driving her from the house. Eve then enlists in the cause of charity to combat her husband's abuses. After Beppo's release he seeks out and kills Brandon, thus removing all obstacles between Blair and Eve.
