Synopsis
Karl "Curly" Casterline, a New York cop discharged after a "public-minded" citizen ses him playfully shooting craps for pennies, becomes a hired hand on a northern Midwest farm to help the war effort. While he is attracted to Mina, the niece of his boss, Adolf Bauerle, Curly suspects that Bauerle and a cohort Kurz plan to blow up a troop train. Curly hides and kills Kurz and Bauerle when they each try to throw the switch, creating a delay that allows the train to pass unharmed. After Curly is jailed and roughed up by Sheriff Lindig, Mina praises Curly for preventing her uncle from murdering thousands of soldiers. When a German jury sentences Curly to death, and the Governor refuses to pardon him, the case becomes celebrated nationwide. After the armistice, the Governor explains that he refused the pardon to enlighten the public to the danger of German propaganda. After he pardons Curly and enlists him as an officer to protect the State from its enemies, Curly, who married Mina in jail, escorts Lindig and his cohorts to Leavenworth.
